My experience of creating a reproduction from a photograph from an old painting

In my online store there is for sale a Poster A Bold Bluff By Cassius Marcellus Coolidge, which has its own history of creation. At first I had an order for a handmade replica of A Bold Bluff orig. Cassius Marcellus Coolidge 1903, but despite the fact that this painting is copied endlessly on souvenirs, T-shirts and various pop-cultural kitsch, but it is almost impossible to find a high-quality photo. There are no problems with copyright of the painting, they have long lost their force and you can make as many copies and reproductions as you like, but there is a not so easy with access to the original to take a quality photo of this painting. The reason for this is very simple – the original painting is in a private collection, new owner bought it at New York auction in 2005 for $590,400. There are only old photos on the Internet, but even paid photos are not of very good quality. I painted it with acrylic on canvas using some poor quality photos from the internet, like a referens. I didn’t have any other options. The handmade reproduction turned out to be successful and the customer was satisfied, because he had long wanted to get a good replica of this painting and had been looking for an artist for a long time. It was a pleasant experience. I drew a copy and photographed painting in good quality and now I have the opportunity to make posters of my reproduction in good quality.

An interesting fact from the history of this painting is that the original painting A Bald Bluff was commissioned by the advertising agency Brown & Bigelow to advertise cigars. In those days, advertising posters were drawn by artists on canvas 🙂 The author painted a series of several paintings on this topic, after which a boom began in the world for pictures of animals playing poker, dancing and having fun like people. More than a hundred years have passed, and the topic is still relevant and interesting. Poker players just love these dogs.
